Joel Massey, Head Chef at The Thomas Lord in West Meon.

Having always wanted to be a chef, Joel started his career locally at the 2AA rosette Botley Grange Hotel in Hampshire and was soon promoted to Chef de Partie.

In order to further his career Joel then moved on to work at the beautiful Wickham Vineyard. During his time there, he continued to perfect his role as CDP until his hard-earned talent and passion for cooking paid off resulting in a promotion to Sous Chef at the Allium in Fairford

Joel soon reached his goal position as Head Chef at Amelia and Friends in Chichester. He helped start and grow this wonderful restaurant which then subsequently received a Bib Gourmand.

The bright lights of the city were calling and he was craving a new challenge, so Joel moved to London where he was talented enough to secure senior positions at several famous restaurants including Galvin Bistro (2 Rosettes), Hixter (Marc Hix), Hotel Chocolate and Verden (2 Rosettes) where he worked alongside some of London’s top chefs.

After 7 wonderful years exploring what London kitchens have to offer and learning a wide variety of cooking skills, Joel moved back to his roots and family in Hampshire and is now Head Chef at The Thomas Lord. Working in this busy environment Joel leads his team with his trademark laid back style; he’s definitely not the old fashioned ‘shout and swear’ kind of chef! He loves to design and produce innovative seasonal dishes using the wonderful variety of locally produced fish, meat and cheese alongside freshly picked seasonal fruits and vegetables.
